Calculated Daily Loss!
At a mid-sized Mobile Network Operator (MNO) client where Mobius Data Sentry is deployed, our service revealed a daily revenue loss of approximately $56,000 to the network due to WhatsApp Bypass Fraud, as calculated by the MNO client.
How the Loss was calculated:
We deployed the Mobius Data Sentry DPI solution on all of the IP traffic for the MNO. (over 350 Gbps per second)
Mobius identified all of the WhatsApp traffic on the network and identified the WhatsApp Voice and Video calls being made on the network.
Mobius then identified all of the Voice Bypass Fraud on WhatsApp and monitored it for 30 days. This monitoring enabled us to understand the true cost of the MNOs Losses! It also allowed us to test our WhatsApp controls to ensure that we were implementing and affecting the desired outcome on the MNO traffic without causing unwanted QOS issues.
Of all the WhatsApp Voice calls on the MNO an average of 3.9% of the voice calls were identified as Bypass Fraud (GSM to WhatsApp calls)
The average call duration was over 8 minutes. (To remain conservative only 25% of this number was used for the loss calculation.)
Loss = (# of Fraud calls per day) x (2 min) x (International termination cost per minute)
The Mobius Team in Partnership with the MNO implemented WhatsApp Controls that allowed the network to stop the identified Bypass Fraud (GSM to WhatsApp calls) and not interfere with the normal WhatsApp to WhatsApp Voice and Video communications.
